Dan Slaughter - Deathwitch (2004)

Once upon a time there was a Swedish band called Deathwitch, they are no more, though during their career they released some quite good thrashing black metal albums. The last album that the world saw from them, was 'Violence Blasphemy Sodomy', back in the days, when the album was released, I had a little chat with drummer Dan Slaughter.

1. Hails Dan Slaughter, how are things in Sweden at the moment?
Hail! I’m busy as hell with a lot of things, not Deathwitch tough haha.

2. Will you please introduce yourself and tell us how your metal adventure started?
The only band I play in at the moment is Deathwitch. I have played in many small underground bands since late 80’s from time to time. I’m also a biker and like fast cars.

3. You are ready with your new onslaught “Violence Blasphemy Sodomy”, a superb album to start the new year with... What was your ideas when the band started writing music for a new album?
To be honest I didn’t record the drums for the new album. I was busy with other shit and was not able to travel to Gothenburg at that time so a session drummer called Morbid Juttu did my work. I’m satisfied with his and the other guys musical work on the album! I rehearsed some of the songs before the recording session and I think our main goal was to create some aggressive and ugly metal of violent death.

4. Did the album end up as you all imagined?
I think it’s cool! It would maybe be a bit more evil if I managed to do the drums haha, I prefer my drum sound on the previous album ‘Deathfuck Rituals’ but I have no problems with it.

5. How has the first assaults from the press been, any positive surprises or does they all hate you?
Both great and a lot of negative shit, but who cares. Enjoy or hate.

6. Deathwitch has always been about primitive, yet very hardhitting and crushing metal, with influences from the early scenes of death, thrash and black metal... What is appealing to you about those styles of metal?
For me it was the music I grew up with. Drink alcohol and listen to blasphemous metal like Sodom, Sarcofago, Possessed, Death, Slayer……. It was a great time! So it’s great to play that kind of aggressive music.

7. When one throws on a Deathwitch album, the sincere freshness of a young band which wants to kill the entire world, come to mind. Though the band has some years on the back and I know Terror isn’t as young as he has been... How does Deathwitch keep the fresh and “fuck you all” spirit and attitude?
I think Terror is over 30 years old and I only have a few years left to the 40 limit huh… Slade is like 35. I think it’s important to find the feeling in the songs like you did when you listened to the same kind of music when you were young.

8. How important is the “fuck you all” attitude for the band?
I don’t know if we have that attitude maybe both me and Slade lives a bit in the FTW attitude in the biker world… But it’s a lot of ‘FUCK’ in the lyrics hahaha

9. What is metal about in your eyes?
Aggression, speed and evil lyrics!

10. What makes a so called metal band un-metal?
Happy riffing and love lyrics.

11. Who writes the music in the band?
I think Terror writes most of the riffs and then we work on it together. I always want him to create bad riffs that he doesn’t like at all, then I will like it. He normally creates heavy doom/death riffs in his other bands like Runemagick and The Funeral Orchestra. So I always ask him to make fast riffs that sucks, hahahaha.

12. Where is the inspiration to the music found?
Violence, Sodomy and Blashpemy!

13. It is easy to hear your are an excellent drummer, with great variation and superb pace shifts and great breaks... When did you start to play the drums and what inspired you to start?
Hmmm well I hope you like MY drumming on ‘Deathfuck Rituals’ hehe but Morbid Juttus work on “Violence Sodomy Blasphemy is cool! I have played drums from time to time for over 20 years.

14. Where do you find inspiration to your drumming?
Hate, aggression, booze and metal…

15. The influences of Deathwitch are found in the eighties... How much do your own musical taste collide with the music of Deathwitch?
A lot. I still listen to the old bands.

16. How much is Deathwitch a band, we all know that Terror participates in a lot of different things... What about you and Slade Doom do you play in other bands?
For me and Slade, Deathwitch is our only band even tough we almost never rehearse. Terror is busy with Runemagick and The Funeral Orchestra. He have also helped some other shit bands with drums over the years like Sacramentum and Swordmaster. But I guess that Runemagick is the only BAND for him.

17. How is Deathwitch’s live activities, I could imagine you kicks serious ass on stage... Are playing a lot live?
We have never played live. Even not before I joined the band. We’ll see what will happen in the future.

18. Will we at some point see you in Denmark and maybe Aalborg? It isn’t that far away from Göteborg!
It’s close, but I am in Thailand right now haha. I hope so.

19. This is your first album on your new label Wicked World, how do you feel about the label and how have they treated you so far?
I don’t have so much contact with the label but it seems good so far I think.

20. Where was “Violence Blasphemy Sodomy” recorded and who produced it? The raw and very energetic production really slays!
I think it’s recorded in 2 different studios in Gothenburg and some stuff at Terror's own little studio.

21. You are one of the great few bands, which plays with sincere and a crushing feeling of metal... Why is that feeling so hard to find in new bands and even many new releases with once great bands?
People get old and forget the ancient spirit of metal and the young ones likes other shit…

22. Will you share your 3 all time favorite albums with the worldwide ‘bangers?
Death – Scream Bloody Gore
Slayer – Reign In Blood
Motörhead - Motörhead

23. Thanks a for answering my questions, I’ll leave the last words of torment to you!
Thanks man!

Peter Karlssen - Vedervärdig (14th AUgust 2002)

Vedervärdig Is a solo project from Sweden which plays a very dirty raw noisy black metal. This interview was conducted on 14th August 2002.

1.) Let's start off with a short introduction to the band.
Vedervärdig consists only of me and has been around since sometime autumn 2001. I can't really pinpoint the start since it was just some loose ideas that eventually got recorded. I usually do all things myself, but I've had some help of my good friend and enemy Självhat from time to time..

2.) For those of us who dont speak swedish, what does the name mean?
Something along the lines of repulsive or discusting. I've never really come across a good translation.

3.) The music is a blend of raw minimalistic black metal and power electronix/noise stuff. where did the idea behind this kind of music come from? and how would you personally describe the music?
I'm not quite sure where it came from. I've always had a limited acess to real drums, and I'm not much of a drummer either, so I've played around quite a bit with drum machines (computer based, mainly.) Of course, this is not very stimulating in the long run, and I just started tweeking the sounds with distortion and filters after a while. I liked the sound and have worked from there.

Where I am now, I would probably describe the music as noise based on black metal aestethics, at the beginning it was rather the other way around.

4.) Would you say your main influence is within the black metal genre or the noisier side of things? name some bands.
I didn't really listen to much electronic music until some time after the beginning of Vedervärdig, but by now I've started to check out alot of the genres. To mention some bands, Mz. 412, NON, Sutcliffe jügend and of course, Sechzehn Schmerzen comes up from the top of my head.

When it comes to Black Metal, I consume alot of it and I can't really tell what has influenced me. Some favorites would include Megiddo, Abruptum, Ildjarn, Manes and Antaeus.

5.) How do you feel about the old days of the Swedish Black Metal scene with bands like Opthalamia and such. do you feel the Swedish scene had died now adays? it seems all we get out of sweden is In Flames clones now adays.
I shouldn't really comment on the 'old days' since I wasn't around back then due to my rather young age. I would however say that looking back on it, there seems to have been alot more interesting bands back then than it is now. I could probably agree with the In Flames statement, almost all of the swedish bands are boring, clean and melodic.

6.) Do you have any other projects you'd like to share with us?
I play drums in a grind-like band called Todes Terror. We don't really have a real rehersal room, and most of the time we just jam and improvise. Sometime we might play live or release something, but right now I don't know.

I also do some more pure-bred death industrial that I don't really know what to do with.

7.) What do these represent, and why did you create them rather than incorporate these musical ideas in vedervardig?
Well, I wouldn't want to mix up Vedervärdig with grind, but I do have a taste for grindcore and punk. Also, this is my only chance to play along with other people, which is indeed nice from time to time.

8.) Your demos are very minimalistic in the sense that there is no artwork, no lyrics, just a track list. is there a reason behind this? perhaps to keep it all a mistery?
There really isn't a reason, but I've always had a taste for minimalism.

9.) When the demos are re-issued onto cd will there be artwork?
Perhaps it will, perhaps not, I'm not taking a real standpoint on this. I don't really know if the Demos will be re-released on CD. Right now I'm discussing a release of the first two on a tape with the new founded Total Holocaust Records.

10.) As i dont have any lyrics with the demos, i am unsure what the music is about, would you indulge us and let us know some of the philosophy?
It has varied. The first demo was basically just a musical experiment and the lyrics where simple destructive and misanthropic rants. The second demo had a more narrative tone, third person descriptions of death and suffering. Post Metal really had no lyrics, at least not any written, all was just improvised at the time of recording.

11.) What can we expect in the future/contact info/last words.
If all goes as planned, the first two demos will be released on a single cassette sometime rather soon. Hopefully we can expect a seven inch later this fall and perhaps also a few compilation tracks.

I can be reached via e-mail, all_ruins@postmaster.co.uk

Nordvargr - Mz.412 (October 2001)

mz.412 is a band from Sweden, now going for over a decade they are one of the leading acts in the black industrial world, and one of the bettter known acts from CMI. This interview was conducted with Nordvargr in October 2001.

1.) Greetings Nordvargr, For The Readers who dont know Mz.412 Could you please give an a small history to introduce them to your main project?
MZ. 412 was founded in 1988 and has since then delivered dark and disturbing true industrial music. We took a break between 1991 - 1995 since we somehow lost our inspiration... we regrouped with two new members from the BM scene in 1995.

2.) When i think about Mz.412 the first thing i think about the is the album Burning The Temple of god. this Album has texts and artwork which clearly display a disliking for christianity. Has this always been your main influence and inspiration when writing the music?
Almost... the morals which this society are founded on are so unnatural and wrong that it is impossible to not be inspired by it.

3.) on Burning The Temple of god we saw the band's love and support of the black metal scene with the track "Feasting on Khristian Blood" and also the band's image was a BM type image there, Would there be any Black Metal tracks on future Mz.412 releases?
It is impossible to answer with a yes or no... there is a possibility, but right now we are in a period where we are trying to bring forth the old sound of the first recordings, but in a more dark and Satanic way.

4.) Do your anti-christian views ever pose any problems since you are on a label which has in the past released various items by christian bands?
No, there has always been these rumours about MZ. 412 vs Mental Destruction etc... but thats all bullshit. Even though we dont like each others ideology, we can still enjoy each others company. Cold Meat Industry is like a big happy family.

5.) On your cds i have seen the label "True Swedish Black Industrial"... To you (and the band) what does this term represent? and what does the music you guys record with this band mean to you?
It is what we call the music... and that is exactly what it is, it represents the true spirit of our musical creation. The music is to us what religion/drugs/sex might be to others - total commitment.

6.) I read in an interview which was a few years old that you have only played two concerts in the past, and the first of these two appeared on Macht Durch Stimme CD which was recorded in gebruary 1990 and released in 1991. Have the 10years since this release only seen Mz.412 perform one other time? And if so how come Mz.412 hasnt been seen more on the stage? Will we be able to see mz.412 touring any time in the future?
Our music is better on record - it is impossible to make it in a live environment, still it is interesting to meet some of the people who enjoy what we do. I dont think there will ever be a tour in the future, but there will be some more gigs.

7.) The most recent Mz.412 release was a limited 7" on CMI (Cold Meat Industry) which i have heard was compiled solely using samples handed to you by members of a CMI mailing list. Is this correct? And, did this make it difficult to make the music in the Mz.412 style?
Yes it is correct. It was a bit tricky to get it right, but in the end we were very pleased with the result. The problem was to process the sounds so that they got that special "MZ. 412-feel"...
It took us twice the time it usually takes to finish the recordings.

8.) When i think about Side Projects of Mz.412 the only projects which comes to mind are the recently Deceased Folkstorm and Nordvargr/Drakh which i dont really know anything about. Would you like to inform us about any of these projects or others which i havent mentioned above?
Here´s a list of some of our projects, some only include MZ. 412 members, others are collaborations with other people:

Folkstorm: Harsh power electronics, kind of MZ. 412-ish, but much more primitive.
Nordvargr/Drakh: Darkambient / electronic soundscapes.
Muskel: Filthy oldschool noise / p.e.
HH9: Unrelentless noise attack!
Toroidh: Neoclassic/ambient

9.) The music by mz.412 has been linked called "ritualistic music" from time to time, I have also heard that "Submit And Obey" from the burning the temple of god album has ritualistic elements, could you please elaborate on this? Does this mean you have performed rituals which you have recorded and which have appeared on the song?
Yes, it contains real recorded rituals performed by MZ. 412.

10.) does your hatred for christianity have it roots with the hypocrisy and lies of the religion, or are the roots in a darker area, such as beliefs in the dark lord, lucifer himself?
I´d say that our beliefs has matured throughout the years. Personally I am fed up with the lies and the unnatural ways of christianity. I recently read that this century will be christianitys last - people are not going to church any more etc... it is sad to see that it took some 2000 years for people to wake up.

11.) What are the plans in the near future for mz.412?
We have just re-released our first LP on CD and the new album "Domin Rex Inferum" will be out in october. After that we are going to release our most important release sofar: "Infernal affairs" which will be a box containing 4 12" records. We are currently recording it... "Domine Rex Inferum" is a ritual prelude to the hell we will unleash on "Infernal Affairs"!

12.) Do you have any last words you'd like to throw out to the readers?
No.

13.) Do you have any contact info such as email, snail mail or homepage addresses which you would like to leave behind with this interview?
Check out our official site: http://listen.to/412

Johan Huldtgren - Obitus (2001-2002)

This interview was originally conducted with Johan and Anders back in May 2001, but they were so drunk while they replied to it that the interview wasnt really worth reading. The interview has now been re-written by Johan with more informative answers

1.) Firstly Would You Tell us who you are and give us a short history of your Band for the people out there who haven't heard of you before.
Obitus is a studio project consisting of Anders Ahlbäck on guitars and myself (Johan Huldtgren) on vocals. We have been around since May 2000 and we released an MCD called "Coup De Grâce" in October of 2000, we then appeared on a 4-way split 'Gather Against Humanity' released in 2001. We have a full length more or less ready, just waiting to get in touch with the right label.

2.) Does the word Obitus mean anything?
It means death in Latin.

3.) Your Demo MCD Coup De Grace Had a quite graphic cover, which shows Hatred for humanity, is this the sole topic of your music? or is there more meaning behind it all?
No not really, all lyrics deal with hatred and contempt for all humans. That is the basis for it all. Then each track may focus on different aspects of this, but the bottom line is always the same.

4.) Seeing all this melodic death metal crap from sweden is normal, so it is a bit surprising to suddenyl hear a band like Obitus which is some of the most raw angry music i have ever heard, are there any other acts in sweden such as yourself which you are aware of??
Not really, as you said most of the stuff that's from Sweden, and Gothenburg in particular is melodic stuff; so, when I look for raw black metal I generally do not even think of looking for Swedish bands.

5.) would you say this is perhaps a reason Obitus has not been signed, as one wouldnt expect good raw bm from Sweden?
Well I guess that's possible, but seeing how many other bands they sign from this geographic area I don't really think that has anything to do with it; besides we've only spoken to a few labels yet, perhaps just the wrong ones

6.) you spend other time in some other bands, would you like to introduce us to these other projects??
We both play in a death/thrash band called Clonaeon (formerly known as Vaticide)

7.) You'll be appearing on a tribute in a few months to the black metal kings Mayhem, will Obitus be a band which will feature n compilations and such in the future, or will you be stepping back into the shadows of the underground?
Well depending on what opportunities arrise we might do some compilations. We are not big fans of tributes in general, so we will probably not to any more of those.

8.) And finally what are the plans for the future of Obitus?
A full-length is recorded and we have some work left on that, and then we just need to find a label that is interested.

9.) Also, please provide website information, if applicable....
www.obitus.org

It's not been updated in a long time now, but we are a bit in limbo right now,
waiting, trying to get a contract for the full length and all, but I try to update it as often as there is something relevant to tell.

Joakim Karlsson - Craft (Late 99/Early 00)

Raw Swedish Black Metal Band, The interview Was Conducted With The guitar player Joakim In Late 1999/early 2000.

1.) A brief synopsis of the projects history/contributing members/release history
CRAFT was formed in the winter of 1994/95 by Daniel and myself, the music back then was pretty primitive stuff (because we couldn't handle the instruments properly I guess, haha). Anyway, we brought in another guitarist/vocalist and a bassist and started to rehearse say three times a week for at least three hours each time, and we kept on like this for a couple of years. Our lives pretty much orbited around CRAFT then (we were called NOCTA then by the way, but who cares). We actually recorded some tracks that was supposed to become demos (four tracks in 1996 I think, and two in 1998), but we never released them because we didn't have enough money, and the whole band was sort of lazy and unorganized at that time. These recordings I speak of are still available through us if someone is cares of owning them. Between late 1997 and 99 all members lived at totally different places (the other guitarist even lived in Norway for a while) so there was not much rehearsing at all, mostly songwriting from my behalf. So then some members left the band because they didn't think anything was ever going to happen with CRAFT. However, in 1999 we (only two of us) got together and decided we wanted to release a demo seriously for once, so Daniel and I recorded two new tracks and released it as a demo along with the two tracks recorded in 98. We asked a friend of ours if he could do the vocals (Björn), and after he heard the songs he agreed to do it. The tape have received pretty good comments, except for a few where people either seemed to have a problem with Björn's original way of singing or with our synthesizer track (which was a one time thing only, we have used a synth in one single track out of forty or something, and we will never use it again). Anyway it doesn't matter because we are satisfied with the vocals ourselves except for that we had to rush the recording a bit so it probably could have been even better. We were never really split up or anything, just really, really inactive for some periods. I always write new CRAFT material so the band will not die for a very long time yet. We have also fought within the bands a few times, but we are all very close friends so you're bound to get tired of each other's behavior at some point. We always solve these problems after a while anyway. The current line up is John and myself (Joakim) on guitars and Daniel on drums. We don't have a permanent bassist or vocalist for now but we hope to solve this soon. For now I take care of the bass on recordings and friends helps us out with the vocals. Another important ex. member of the band (Erik) will also probably handle some guest vocals on the next release. We have released this demo tape "Total Eclipse" last year and also a newer rehearsal "demo" without a name (or maybe it's entitled "Rehearsal Demo Dec. 1999"). And then there is the one from 1996 which never was officially released. Some people got it anyway.

2.) Give some general thoughts on the inspiration behind the music.
I have written so much music now that it comes naturally for me. I don't have to think about writing a riff, it just comes out when I improvise. But I suppose deep down I am influenced by the bands I listen to the most - Black Sabbath, Darkthrone, Trelldom, Thorns and stuff like that. The others in the band doesn't write music for CRAFT except when we get together and rehearse, then they usually come up with suggestions but I always have complete songs done before we rehearse which we then just modify in case it's needed.

3.) Some specifics on your sound.
I always have a really hard time trying to explain our sound to people, and the demo... Well, you could probably explain about the demo, because you've heard it. I can tell you this, the new stuff is a thousand times better than the two tapes, because they are the best songs we have ever written so far since the start. We have about ten songs that we will record and release as an album later this year (through an English label probably, but I won't say too much about it as there's still time for something to fuck up), and these songs have been rewritten and rearranged to hell
(perfection). Speaking from my own point of view, this will be a very good album indeed. All riffs we didn't like we trashed and replaced. We might have selected between somewhere around twentyfive songs and ended up with these ten, which are newly assembled versions of all the best stuff in these twentyfive all together. I like every single riff in it, so for me these are great songs, and we're capable of playing them as well. But I can't speak for anyone other than myself. The demo is crap in comparison to the new stuff. The songs are shorter and more varied. The riffs are way more darker, and harder. Not as many slow (and annoying) parts as in the "Total Eclipse" demo, the drumming will not be the standard black metal shit either. No synthesizers ever again, we tried this on one track in 1998 and it was gay as I stated earlier. This is hard, I suppose these answers will have to do... I can't explain it any better.

4.) What is your opinion on the state of the underground situation?
Hmmm... The people I keep contact with are great people, I don't know about the rest. But there are some underground bands still and that is great although a large part of metal has become mainstream which I'm no fan of so to speak. To me it makes no difference really, because most idiots (I talk of the little girls and boys who idolizes people like Dani and such - these types of people) are not a part of the underground at all. I don't have any contact with those people, and I don't think of them as a part of any scene at all. They are retards and I don't even know why they think they are into death or black metal. But still the UNDERGROUND is a cool place for the devoted people I think, there are still demos to trade so...

5.) What is coming up for this project over the next 1-2 years?
There will be a supreme debut album. Or if thing fuck up - a supreme second CRAFT demo tape (I'm not counting the rehearsal here). We will try to find some permanent members who can handle the vocals and the bass. I will also try to get the other members to move down to Gothenburg where I live so we can get a real rehearsal place and rehearse as fuck. I don't really know about the future, but so far our music has gotten darker and better with every year, and I expect it continue...

Dan Swanö - Edge of Sanity, Soundsuite Studios, Infestdead, Nightingale... etc... (July 1999)

This Interview Was Conducted on on the 24th of July 1999 with Dan Swanö of Edge of Sanity fame, who also is known to be the owner of Soundsuite Studios, and has produced many bands.

It must be noted that i did this interview back then for a music show which was on the net and was an all death/black metal show, they wanted interviews for their page but in the end never did anything with their page and have lost touch with them, I thought i would clear this up regarding question3.

1.) For The Readers who are unfamiliar with you, give some background info on the bands you have played/worked with.
I started to play with Unicorn in 1988 which can be considered as my only real band ever. I have played in tons of band but none have felt really right except Unicorn. I also did stuff like EDGE OF SANITY, PAN-THY-MONIUM, INFESTDEAD, WOUNDED KNEE, ROUTE NINE, NIGHTINGALE and much more. Try http://www.come.to/swano for a full info.

2.) since you are the owner of unisound studios you get to work with alot of bands, how does feel to work with all these well known, and some not so well known, Acts?
I quit working with other band in 1997. Unisound is closed since then, but I enjoyed that period pretty much. It was alot of hrdwork and a lot of fun buit i kinda turned out 60%-40% to the right side.

3.) The dj of The Show Khaos AD( www.khaosad.com) is a fan of your music, and he likes to play it, He was wondering if you have heard the show, If ya have, what'd ya think of it?? Also, how do you feel about the whole internet scene? Do you think will help unknown bands reach a wider audience? And maybe cut a big piece out of the the record companies market?
I haven't figured out how to listen to the radio thru internet yet. I think this will will be a great way for me to promote some of my more "hard to get" releases. I think the recordcompany must find a way to make it work out anyway, this will always be around you know.

4.) Which bands do you to listen to? and What what bands are your influences?
I listen to anything with good melodies, right now it's the latest Bryan Adams, he's a fave of mine since way back, his vocalharmonies kill me!!! My basic faves are MARILLION, RUSH, SPOCK'S BEARD and I also enjoy stuff like THE MISSION, ARENA and some other stuff fro, VERGLAS etc. My influences are the same stuff as I listen to.

5.) I Have Noticed that you have either played or sung with all of Blakkheim's projects, is there some kind of special friendship here that triggers these collaberations? Are there Any Plans for Future Diabolical Masquerade Cds?
I hope to find time for the fourth one aswell, I would hate myself if I didn't do it. We'll see. I have tons of shit coming up.

6.) How Do you feel about the religious movements in the music World? Such as the xian (christian) bands trying to gain a public through Black and Death metal, Do you Find that preaching like this is a pest in the metal scene?
I used to do that shit myself so I can only say, it's everyones choice what the wish to do with their lives and with their musicality.

7.) I Was Told you Were A Guest on the Therion - Theli cd and that you dont really like the music... If you dont like the music, why'd ya do the guest appearance?
I think the opportuinty for my to make a guest apperance on such a well selling record was great. I think that album was only a bridge to what they did on the last album, which I believe is great with real choirs and real string etc. I am satisfied with my performance.

8.) Some people have a hatred towards bands who just turn towards this music as a way of making money, like cradle of filth changing to black metal from death metal, and having sooo much merchandise, they think that cof ruined the name of metal, and they dont even sound like black metal, how do you feel about bands like this?
I think their music is pretty uninteresting but I think they have a great image and know how to market themselves in a tough world like this. The kids (and Kerrang!) seem to dig it so...cash it in. It's all about the money for some....

9.) A Friend of mine who's a fan of a band named Ghoststorm, (who's album you produced in `95) wanted me to ask you what happened to this band?
The latest I heard was they have wimped out and started to play, what their old manager reffered to as "pop music" and therefore he quitr working for them and Sekla was the main driving force behind that band in the publics eye, so they will most likely disappear..a shame because they could have been something.

10.) Most of the music you play in Edge of Sanity, Infestdead and Moontower were all quite melodic are there any plans for a Brutal death or maybe raw black metal projects? or any other kind of project in another style of music?
My solo album is kinda raw for me. I see agression and rawness coming in different shapes.I have planned to record one more album in this brutal directtion in the future, but that's far out now.
