Nocturnal Breed is a black/thrash band originating from Norway, with various dimmu members and founded by Ex Gehenna member Svartalv, This interview was carried out By Berg in 2005 for an Estonian Metal zine called Pläkk.
1. Nocturnal Breed is often described as alco thrash metal band, is that what you guys call yourself as well?
Haha, I guess that’s a suiting description! We like to get hammered and we play thrash, so why not? I have always said that I separate good music from bad music by the speed I down a 6-pack of cold ones. And if people feel like getting wasted and thrashing around when listening to our music that’s fucking cool. I know I do! Haha, not that it usually takes much work to "fool" me into getting drunk tho. For us doing music have always been, and always will be, about having a good fucking time and having loads of laughs with buddys. And being drunk is one of our favourite past times, hehe. So yeah, Alco-Thrash sounds pretty good to me.
2. Good! So what would you, as a drinking fan, say to Erlend Erichsen (ex GORGOROTH) about his first book "National Satanist"? How do you feel about him thinking „the black metal scene, with some exceptions, has been ruined by drugs, spoiled brats, beer and commercialism.”?
Haha, he wrote a book? Damn, I wasn’t aware of that. Well, I don’t really care for Gorgoroth, him personally or his thoughts on that. If that’s his opinion that’s fine by me, couldn’t care less. We are not a black metal band, and never were. The main objective with that band has always been to have a good fucking time, and do it OUR way, not the way other people tell us or think it should be. If people want to spend their lives sitting in a dark room being bored while wishing they were dead that’s their choice, and their right. For me that’s a waste, I want to get the most out of my life and have a laugh every minute of it. Good thing you underlined Beer and not the others by the way. Thought you were calling me a drunken, commercial dopehead of a brat there a second, hahahaha.
3. Early years were really productive for the band, tours, an album every year. What happened in that quiet time from 2000 to 2004? Just troubles with labels?
Well, there were several things that fucked up really. Label problems, line up changes and last but not least us being fucking slow, haha. I guess the whole band was kinda put on hold for a while before it slowly awoke again.
We did do quite a few shows in Norway in that period tho, mostly here in Oslo (among them the 2002 Inferno Festival.)
4. Last lineup change took place not so long ago, just few weeks ago that new guitar player was announced. How has A.E.Rattlehead managed to fit in?
He fits in just perfect. I actually only got to know him a few weeks before he tried out with us. I was told by some mutual friends that he was a killer guitarist and a cool guy, and it all turned out to be true. He is great for the band both as a musician, but also socially. This is just what we needed since we were having some problems with Thrawn in both those matters. Everyone is really happy with having him in the band and we're having more fun at rehearsals and as a band than we have had in a very long time.
5. Finally your long time plan to release a boxset with re-releases and unreleased demos has come true. Is that "the birthday cake" for fans to celebrate NB's upcoming 10th birthday or is there something even more exclusive on its way?
Has it been 10 years already? Haha, time flies when you’re in a coma don’t it? We have been working with that boxset since 2002 actually, the answer to your question must be no. It’s not supposed to be a 10th anniversary salute to ourselves. Once again the reasons for the delay are the above mentioned. Label problems and all that shit. BUT it finally got out and we're extremely happy with the way it turned out. Painkiller did a great job with it! Still to come are also pic disks and vinyls also. So people better start working overtime to make sure they can buy all this shit, hahaha. About next years 10th birthday we really haven’t gotten so far as discussing that yet. I’m sure Destroyer have some plans tho, always tons of ideas in that head of his, hehe. But we'll see. We got to do something grand, that’s for sure!
6. From Norwegian Metal Scene, who is the worst drinker ever (passing out after few beers, vomiting everywhere etc)? If you don't want to hurt your friends’ feelings, you can tell me whose girlfriend is easiest to hit on?
Hahaha, the worst drinker? Man I don’t know. I guess some would say me, but I don’t pass out or vomit tho. About girlfriends, I just suggest you get them drunk and see what happens, hehe. Maybe you'll get lucky, who knows?
7. If you are the worst, what is the most embarrassing thing you have done while drunk? ”I don’t remember because I had blackout” doesn’t count as an answer.
Hahaha, this is a hard question. I think it would be better to ask the people that hang out with me than asking me as I don’t really have much shame when I drink. I don’t really get embarrassed, hehe. I’m of the opinion that it’s fun making an ass out of yourself when drunk, it’s good to get a laugh out of it.
8. A year ago there were talks about plans to make a video for "Motörmouth" and add that to your next full length album as a CD-ROM feature. What happened with that, still on the cards?
We are still thinking about things like that, but that video was put on hold after we nearly finished it and the whole project got deleted or something after a computer crashed. Yeah, backups are for pussies ! After that happened we really didn’t have time to start over again, and now we are discussing what we should do. We are thinking about maybe doing videos for a couple of other songs since we are recording a new album. Again, we are fucking slow and things that others do in a day we tend to use a month on, hehe. Could it have been something we smoked...?
9. Seems Nocturnal Breed isn’t the luckiest band around. Any details you dare to give us about new album?
Yeah seems so. We've been knee deep in shit since 98 more or less, hehe. Anyway, about the new album the plan is to start recording early November and get it out in March 2006. We already recorded 6 songs, but we'll rerecord those. Now we have 8-9 songs ready already and are working a few more to complete it. Work title for the album is "Code of Conduct".
10. Another rumor from the past - you, S. A. Destroyer and ex drummer from Thrashcan Darlings doing a project. Any news about that?
Yeah that’s correct. Both me and Destroyer have made quite a few songs, but we still haven’t gotten as far as actually playing them together tho, hehe. Since both me and him are big fans of bands like The Cult, WASP, Warrior Soul, etc we have always wanted to do some plain rock n roll shit. We'll see what will happen with that in the future. The idea is just to get together and have a few beers and play some straight forward rock n roll.
11. You mentioned you guys being slow. Doesn’t that project slow Nocturnal Breed down even more? What will future hold for Nocturnal Breed anyway?
Well as we didn’t even get started on this it hasn’t really slowed us down yet, hehe. This project is just something we want to do to have a good time, playing some kick ass rock n roll while getting drunk at the rehearsal room. Breed is of course always the no 1 priority. As for Breed I already told you about us working on a new album, and we also have a lot of gigs planned for 2006.
12. Let's say you are sitting in the bar, minding your own beer, what type of NB fan would you like to recognise you:
a) fan that would come, kneel, kiss your boots and say "we're not worth thy"
b) hot chicks . . .
c) person who just would be interested in having good & blurry time, whether you are famous rockstar or not
d) don't care, I wouldn't remember in the morning anyway
It's always cool when people come over to say hello, but hey.. Hot chicks are always a good thing, hehe.
13. A traditional question in all our interviews - how much, if any, do you know about Estonian metal scene?
Hehe, no I can’t say I do... Got any recommendations?
14. Well here are few mp3s for you. How many cold ones do you down with bands from that list, ie is there anything you like?
I could drink with anyone, haha. I was wondering one thing tho. Is Shower a band name? And does it have different meaning in Estonian than English? hehe. Aggressor liked a lot, I actually think I've heard them before somewhere.
15. Shower is indeed a bands name and it doesn’t mean anything in Estonian. You might have heard Aggressor, they are like 20 years old... Doing industrial now though, under a different name. Any final word you want to add to be translated to Estonian and be immortalized in the metal history?
Hehe, it is? Weird name I must say, hehe. If Aggressor has been around for so long, I guess that explains why it sounded familiar.
16. Anyway, last words?
1. Nocturnal Breed is often described as alco thrash metal band, is that what you guys call yourself as well?
Haha, I guess that’s a suiting description! We like to get hammered and we play thrash, so why not?
