Vrolg - Nigrescent (13th August 2002)

Nigrescent is a one man project from England which reminds one of Burzum during the eras Hvis Lysset Tar Os and Filosofem. This interview was conducted with Vrolg on 13th August 2002.

1.) Gegroet vrolg, tell us about your band nigrescent.
Hails!

Basically Nigrescent has been a project of mine since around 1998. In 2000/2001, four demos were recorded. Evisceration was the fourth and last demo to be recorded. Evisceration paved the way for Palace Of The Dark Light, which was recorded in early 2002. Winds Of Sorrow, which is completely ambient was recently finished and is now available. I'm currently writing material at the moment, which I hope to finish before the end of the year.

2.) The name means darkness, is darkness perhaps another way of stating hatred? and is this the main influence behind the music?
I suppose you could say that it is another way of stating hatred. The main influence behind the music is darkness, and I suppose that it could be interpreted in many ways.

3.) Is there a local scene where you are? or is the reason for nigrescent beind a solo project the lack of a scene?
There is no real local scene where I am. Frost and Anaal Nathrakh are from this area, and that's about it really. There is no real scene of which to speak.

The reason for Nigrescent being a solo project is because I prefer it that way. I prefer it to be just myself as I can create the music I want without others polluting it.

4.) The UK has had a surge recently in raw bm bands, why do you think this is?
I haven't a clue really.

5.) You also have a label, tellus about this?
Sol (of Arkadia) and myself own Blackthrone Productions. We have currently released material by Arkadia, Nigrescent, Bleak and The Cold Beyond. There is also a Blackthrone Productions compilation which includes such bands as Frozen Shadows, Buchenwald Oven, Gollum, and many more.

6.) What was the main drive behind setting up this label?
Originally I just wanted something to release Nigrescent material. We have kept the prices low too, as I originally intended to.

7.) If you could be part of any scene in the world, which scene would it be?
I'm not sure really. There seems to be good music coming out of a lot of different countries at the moment. Even though there is no real scene here, I like it here.

8.) What is so special about this country?
It's full of history and great scenery.

9.) What bands do you draw most of your influence from?
Burzum, Mortiis, Vond, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Kristallnacht, Arcturus, Seigneur Voland, Hate Forest, Vinterriket, Bilskirnir, Thunderbolt, Ulver and many more bands.

10.) What do you think of the following religions
(i) xianity
(ii) traditional satanism
(iii) laveyan satanism

Well, I don't think much of religion. Religion is a disease, just another way to control people.

11.) Give us a quick round up of the band, label futures plus contacts.
Information on the releases is available at www.totaldarkness.co.uk, you can also buy the releases from www.christcrusher.com and www.supernalmusic.com among other places.

12.) Any last words?
Thanks for the support!
